007 Why should we change?

Today’s topic is about continuing education and bettering yourself. Are you the best version off who you can be? We challenged our readers to send us an email if they believe that they are the best version of themselves. We received a response from one of our listeners. Harris is young manager who runs a team of about 10 people is making about 100,000 euros a year. So why does he need to improve? Although this thought process is understandable, let’s look at it from the perspective of someone with 20 years of experience in IT management.

Congratulations are in order as you’ve been doing well in your leadership position for about three years now, as you mentioned. So why should you change or improve? Promotion is a massive reason why improvement is vital. How do you get promoted? You show your superiors that you’re capable of being more responsible and ready for more. What comes with promotion? Higher position and of course a higher salary! My assumption is you’re not working only 40 hours. I would guess you’re doing about 50 or 60 hours a week. Experienced leaders don’t switch their brains off at 1700! You take your thoughts with you. This is usually not the case in non-leadership positions. The more responsibility you have, the more you put into it. However, if you improve yourself and become better at your job, the less time you will need to put into it. My recommendation for the best way to get promoted: try to get unemployed! Trying to get unemployed means setting up your organization in a way that they completely exist without you. The result? You will find yourself getting promoted time after time as you can deliver things that your boss and your colleagues’ thought were not possible. This will not happen if you don’t have the right skills, capabilities, or mindset.

Another reason to improve would be a possible transition to another career one day. Even if you’re satisfied now, that doesn’t mean you will be satisfied tomorrow. We read everywhere that children in school today will be having jobs in 20 years that we have not even heard of! Things are changing at a rate that nobody, 50 years ago, or even 20 years could have predicted.

It’s not a question if they will change, but when they will change. Many jobs are becoming obsolete due to advancements in technology. There is one discipline, one art that is required more and more: that is great leadership! People will always need orientation. There are no excuses! We don’t have, at least in Western Europe, any major social hold-backs anymore.

Hey. So the last time we were speaking about, continuing education and bettering yourself.

Are you the best version off who you can be?

And we challenged our readers to send us an email if they believe that they are in their best position or

that they’re the best version of themselves. We actually got a response from one of our listeners.

Funny, in episode one!

So Harris is relatively young. He doesn’t state exactly when, but he says he recently left university and has been in management for a few years.

He runs a team of about 10 people and he’s making about, 100,000 euros a year.

He’s saying that he feels he’s pretty well off. He’s doing great and everything’s going well.

So why does he need to improve? He doesn’t see anything he can improve on.

What do you think about that? So I feel quite bad for you and understand, as I have seen this e-mail and I know the age.

I’ve heard sometimes youth is wasted on the young.

I understand where you’re coming from and let’s give this some thoughts. Well, when I say if you’re even a bit more mature than this, it sounds harsh. It is a kid, but it’s not. This is not what I’msaying, but I’ve been the same age, and I’ve had exactly the same thoughts.

Believe me. The part is, this was 20 years ago, so I’m now talking with 20 years of experience in IT management. And so let’s go through this.

You come from university, you had the lucky shot and you just received the first leadership position. Congratulations.

You survived in this first leadership role for more than six months, so that means you’re capable of doing it. Congratulations again.

Maybe it’s even worse. And you have a very good diploma.

So that means you’re riding on this wave of success. Whatever you start with, you just do! You deliver it, you’re good at it.

So he’s been in management for three years or something like that. So that means it works, right?

Sure. Whatever you start, it works. And then it may become boring.

Keep in mind whatever the newspaper says, you have 40 to 45 years of work in front of you, right?

Don’t believe the socialists that tell you that you’re just going to retire at 50.

No, no, no chance of it. Aim for 70. Yes, True.

And so why should you change or improve?

This is the question. So I mean, let’s start for the first one.

Do you think that was your last promotion in life? Good question. I mean, how do you get promoted?

Well, you need to show the people that you work with that you’re capable of being more responsible.

You’re ready for more. But if you’re content than how can you do that exactly? That’s the thing. More is the word. We’re not promoting somebody who just does the stuff from yesterday andtoday. And maybe tomorrow.

No, we just promote the people who did well yesterday, do good today, and then they come to us and say “Okay, can we just talk about more?

I want more. I want to improve.”

You can’t do this with your skills that you have. I mean, you can, but we see all these stupid leaders out there who just got promoted because they are there for a while.

And then they get promoted until they suck. Right?

So that’s not the right one. But often, I mean, what comes with promotion?

Higher position and, oh, yeah, and money right?!

We’ll talk about money a lot in the podcast, as I like money. And as I recommend that you don’t work for money. We will go for that in later episodes, but to bring it to the point.

Every promotion gets you more income, right? So what, you don’t want more income?

And I will give you the other side of things.

Here you are, doing a good job. And my assumption is you’re not doing 40 hours.

My assumption is that, if you’re being honest, you’re doing about 50 or 60 hours or something like that.

And experienced leaders know what I’m talking about. When I say we don’t switch our brains off at 1700, I mean we take these thoughts with us.

We have these ideas at the weekend at a barbecue party when we’re with friends. We hear this word, and then it just a domino stone that makes us tick. And we just say “I need a new paper.

Wait, hold. Can you hold my beer? I need a piece of paper.” You write this down because we are on it.

 And this is usually not the case in non-leadership positions. The more responsibility you have in my world, you put more effort into it. You put more brain space into it.

And I know what I’m talking about. As a company owner, I know what I’m talking about. Don’t ask my wife! Here’s the second thing: it’s not about the money.

It’s about time. Yeah, so the better you get, the better you do your job, the less time you need to put into it.

This is a big message in the podcast, and it will continue to be a big message in the podcast.

Do your job as good as you can in less and less time.

So we will talk about this later. My recommendation is “how to get promoted” means my answer is: try to get unemployed.

Try to get unemployed means try to set up your organization in a way that they completely exist without you.

I was always aiming for that part, never worked, I only fell up the ladder.

Very nice. And now, looking back, I know why.

Because I could do even more things. I could deliver more. I could even deliver things that my boss and my colleagues thought were not possible.

And I  could do it because I was focused on the things that I needed to do.

Okay. And so time is a big point. When you do what you do at the moment, and just wait for having less work it equals to having more time.

It will not happen if you don’t have the right skills to steer it. If you don’t have the right capabilities or the right mindset, even two minutes of your calendar, nothing will happen.

I have been there and done that. I have wasted years.

It’s up to you. So that’s another reason for changing, getting better and improving.

But we also spoke about getting a promotion.

We mentioned that with a promotion, we want to increase our salary. You get to a different level.

What if Harris, as I’m sure you’re listening to this, you one day decide that you want to transition out of that career that you’re in now. What if you want to go somewhere else? Why wouldhe?

Well, yeah, why would he? Even if you’re satisfied now, that doesn’t mean you’re gonna be satisfied tomorrow, right?

What if you find something that you’ve become passionate about, but you’ve neglected your skills and been comfortable?

It’s gonna make it that much harder for you to transition into something else.

True. So kids are in school today.

Well, we read everywhere that the kids in school today, 2/3 of them will be having jobs in 20 years, which we don’t even know the names of today!

Right? So things are changing at a rate, which nobody, 50 years ago, or even 20 years ago ever believed was possible.

We are 2019 and up to the sixties in Germany we had operatoes that would pick upthe phone. And yes, I’m talking about picking up the phone connected, to the wire and to the wall.

It was not your phone. This phone was owned by the telecom company. We only had one telecom company in Germany, which was owned by the government.

So we’re not talking about these fancy new smartphone things.

We are talking about a phone, a serious phone, and if you’re a millennia, then you just look it up on Wikipedia. They will give you a picture.

So you picked it up, and then when you want to call to someone, then you just called the operator and said

“Can you just connect me so-and-so?” This is not 1000 years ago. This is just 50 years ago. These jobs are gone, people.

And I’ve had this in my very last company. I believe this is one of the reasons why they are where they are, but whatever.

So they had people who were opening the paper, posting the paper, the envelopes and then putting the letters on a scanner.

They did this manually. Okay? They are already unemployed.

So, looking into the future, I have a tax adviser and I paid quite a lot of money in both countries for tax advisers.

Sorry for them, but they will be unemployed in five years when artificial intelligence takes it over because all of these things will change.

It’s not a question if they would change. The only question is when they will change. Taxi drivers? They are already unemployed. Truck drivers?

They are already unemployed. And maybe we can make him a podcast episode on what may happen to them.

So things are gonna change.

Whatever you think you will do in 20 years, I doubt that you’re right.

So it’s better prepare yourself for going into a great future. And now let’s get out of the negative things as I know, it is not truck drivers who are listening to this podcast.

There is one discipline, one arts that is required more and more. And that is great leadership.

Yes, this is the not the only thing, but this is the thing which I cannot imagine an artificial intelligence will take over.

People need orientation.

The goal of management is reducing complexity, and we live in a world where complexity takes over. I mean,  I tried to buy a new smartphone.

I can’t find one because either they’re completely similar, aren’t they?

The difference is 200 euros, and I just can’t find the reason why.

It’s why this Google phone is so much more expensive than one from this other company.

And I’m just not feeling good. So people need orientation in companies as well. Companies produce different things.

Companies grow and close. And I come from Germany, where we have companies that have been around for literally hundreds of years.

20 years ago in, when the millennia changed, a big company went down and another big company was bought by a competitor from the United Kingdom.

And it was a culture shock.

We will see this happening more and more.

So the message is: Be prepared. Prepare yourself. Become better.

Become better because this is the set side of things.

If you don’t do it, others may do it and you will get left behind.

And then you sit there 40 kilograms overweight with broken knees and back pain at the doctor. And he’s like, “Yeah, well, You should have come earlier than this, maybe at age 30”.

So you screwed up your own life. Don’t do it. It’s by far too much fun.

And these are the best times in the world. You can find any information that you need.

We never had this in mankind before. You have opportunities I believe a big portion of the world still has not understood.

We can start a business. We can do whatever we want. We can learn whatever we want. We don’t have, at least in Western Europe, any major social hold-backs anymore.

An extreme example: A females can vote, right?

So it’s not common in the whole world.

Females can do whatever they want, as men can do it. And I picked this example intentionally. Dear ladies, I do not care about gender at all.

So please don’t argue with me that “blah blah blah.” I don’t care. I really don’t care. When it comes to business, I do not care what your gender is. I don’t care on religion, anything. The only thing that I focus on, which I’m addicted to is performances output. Going back to Europe and we can compare this to the rest of the world, in Europe, everybody can do anything.

So whatever religion, color, gender, or even length of trousers you have, you can do business. You can change, you can leave. You can move around in the European Union and so on and so on. We never had this freedom before.

We can live in a country where we don’t even understand the language. And I know what I’m talking about.

Go back 400 years to 1500 something. You, as a German, move over to Hungary and you don’t understand anyone.

Well, maybe you’re not getting eaten, but it’s highly likely that you will have drastic a problem.

Go back 1000 years to 900 something. If you move out of your tribe, you end up in slavery wherever you are.

So we live in the golden times of mankind. Seriously.
